What You Will Do As a Genetic Counselor (GC), you will offer genetic education, counseling, and support to patients and families who have genetic disorders or suspected genetic conditions referred to the IHI. Your responsibilities will include identifying at-risk family members, interpreting genetic information and results, and discussing available options with patients and their families. You may provide services to individuals and families affected by bleeding disorders, hemoglobinopathies, vascular or lymphatic disorders (including HHT), other rare hematologic conditions, or any other concerns addressed by the IHI medical team. The Opportunity Review medical records and interview patients and/or families to obtain patient and/or family medical histories and record the findings. Assess family history to determine genetic risk and provide genetic education regarding inheritance. Document family pedigrees entering all information into the IHI/IHTC Genetics Registry Database. Update data when available and assist in identifying individuals at-risk in Indiana. Analyze pedigrees to identify family members who are at-risk and discuss with the patients’ and/or families’ how information can be communicated. Assist in identifying appropriate genetic testing. Provide education to the patients’ and/or families’ regarding the option of testing ensuring they understand the possible implications of a genetic test result. Interpret genetic results and communicate with healthcare providers and patients and/or families about the significance of the results. Participate in comprehensive clinic for patients with bleeding disorders and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to establish an appropriate plan of care. Attend multidisciplinary case conferences when applicable. Review available medical literature and identify current data useful in the care of patients and/or families. Support patients’ and/or families’ in identifying resources relating to obscure hematological conditions. When indicated, review with patients’ and/or families’ diagnosis specific recommendations for pregnancy as well as reproductive options. Document patient related activities and relevant data in the electronic medical record and develop plans for follow-up as needed. Develop and present educational materials and programs for internal and external use. Provide personalized and culturally sensitive genetics services considering patients’ and/or families’ beliefs and desires as well as ensures confidentiality. Participate in data collection initiatives as requested. Serve as a resource to IHI staff regarding genetic information and providing optimal genetics services to patients and/or families. Assess patient and family psychological and emotional needs regarding their genetic risk, diagnosis and test results. Refer to multidisciplinary team members when indicated. Minimum Master’s degree in related field. Board certified by the ABGC or ACMG or board-eligible Minimum 3 years of related experience Valid driver’s license and insured automobile required Maintain genetic counseling licensure from Indiana and other states as assigned.
