Position Summary:
The Histology Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day evening operations of the Histology laboratory and supervision of the histology technical and support staff. This may include histotechs, lab assistants, grossing techs & clerical staff.
Specific Responsibilities:
Laboratory Operations:
Organizes time, materials, resources, and personnel in an economical manner, prioritizing the workload to meet the established turnaround times.
Ensure the technical quality of slide preparations.
Print and monitor the daily special stain log to ensure completion of special stains.
Maintain appropriate levels of supplies and reagents commensurate with workload.
Ensure that histology employees comply with company and departmental policies; initiate performance improvement with employees as needed.
Ensure that cases held for special stains, recuts etc. are returned to the requesting pathologist in a timely manner.
Research and resolve any production errors while escalating when necessary.
Evaluate new process improvements and make appropriate recommendations.
Perform bench work as needed and maintain proficiency/competency in technical operations.
Equipment Maintenance:
Maintain equipment and instruments in good operating condition recognize any malfunctions and escalate to Equipment Specialist or Manager.
Ensure all equipment is being properly maintained through Quality Control Log Review.
Quality Assurance:
Develop and perform or supervise Quality Assurance Charts (Stains, Temperatures, and Control Logs on Special Stains etc.)
Maintain a current procedure manual in accordance with CLSI, CAP, CLIA, ISO, CLEP, State & Federal guidelines and recommendations, reviewing and revising as needed.
Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA ISO, CLEP & CAP regulations.
Safety:
Ensure that histology employees comply with safety regulations, including PPE.
Encourage staff to participate in Safety Walks.
Identify potential safety hazards and lead continuous improvement projects.
Leadership:
Provide input in the evaluation of the histology staff, performance evaluation, salary adjustments, and disciplinary actions.
Provide orientation and documentation of training for new histology team members, and ongoing review for current members.
Meet regularly with direct reports to provide coaching and feedback for their development.
Maintain effective communication with the histology staff to ensure that information concerning new policies and procedures is available to the staff in a timely manner and incorporated into routine policies and procedures.
Qualifications & Experience:
REQUIRED
Four (4) years' experience as a histology technician
Two years of Supervisory and/or management experience
Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CLEP, CAP and relevant state regulations
Computer skills: knowledge of MS Office (MS Word, Excel); basic statistics skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
PREFERRED:
BS degree in science or business management
Certified as a HT or HTL (ASCP)
