Job Title : Surgical Technologist First Assistant Job Summary :

A Surgical Technologist First Assistant (Surgical First Assist) plays a critical role in the operating room by directly assisting the surgeon during surgical procedures. This role involves providing advanced technical support, including suturing, tissue manipulation, and hemostasis, while ensuring the sterile field is maintained. The Surgical First Assist collaborates with the surgical team to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

• Assist the surgeon by providing hands-on support during surgical procedures, including retracting tissues, suturing, and applying surgical instruments.
• Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical equipment, instruments, and sterile drapes according to procedure-specific requirements.
• Ensure patient positioning is correct and safe, applying necessary supports and padding.
• Provide hemostasis by using suction, clamps, cauterization, or other techniques to control bleeding.
• Perform wound closure and apply surgical dressings as directed by the surgeon.
• Monitor and maintain the sterile field, ensuring adherence to infection control and aseptic techniques.
• Collaborate with the surgical team to anticipate the surgeon’s needs during the procedure, ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are readily available.
• Assist with patient transport, positioning, and preparation before and after surgery.
• Perform pre- and post-operative instrument and equipment counts with the circulating nurse to ensure accuracy.
• Maintain and troubleshoot surgical instruments and equipment, reporting any issues to the appropriate personnel.

• Education : Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required. Advanced training or certification in surgical first assisting is preferred.
• Certification : Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified First Assistant (CFA) credential through a recognized organization such as NBSTSA or NSAA is required.
• Experience : Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, with specific experience in first assisting preferred.
• Licensure : Must meet state-specific licensing or certification requirements for surgical first assisting.
